FORMER KWPD COP WINS VINDICATION
IN FEDERAL COURT
IN NEW JERSEY
by Dennis Reeves Cooper
If you’re a regular reader of this
newspaper, you know that we try to
give you regular updates on the Tom
Neary case. Tom Neary is the former
Key West cop who was suspended back
in October 2007 and subsequently fired
based on almost-ridiculous charges
trumped up by former Police Chief
Bill Mauldin— who had to resign in
disgrace last year after he “allegedly”
got caught sexually harassing Christie
Phillips, his pretty blond public information
officer.
Mauldin was afraid that Neary
was ready to go public with allegations
of corruption and incompetence
in his department, so he manufactured
charges like Neary was somehow misrepresenting
himself as a federal officer
and was carrying a stolen gun.
The gun charge had to be abruptly
abandoned after Mauldin realized that
his ace investigators had sent one of
the gun’s part numbers to the National
Crime Information Center, rather than
the serial number. Duh!
Mauldin called in the FBI to try
to investigate the “misrepresentation”
charge, but the G-men soon realized
that Mauldin had conned them and
they quickly dropped that investigation
and left town.
