CONVICTED FELONS CAN’T VOTE.
IS RANDY ACEVEDO A
CONVICTED FELON OR NOT?
DID LINDA GOTTWALD USE
MONROE COUNTY MONEY TO
COVER EXPENSES FOR AN
ANIMAL SHELTER IN MICHIGAN?

In Florida, convicted felons
lose their right to vote. Last
year, former Monroe County
School Superintendent Randy
Acevedo was convicted on three
counts of official misconduct.
Jurors found him guilty of trying
to cover up his wife’s alleged
theft of more than $180,000 in
school district funds.
Each charge is a third-degree
felony, punishable by up to
five years in prison. So Randy
is a convicted felon, right? But
he voted in the recent primary
election here. Did he violate the
law? Well, it depends on who
you talk to.
Supervisor of Elections
Harry Sawyer ’s position is
that felons are disenfranchised
immediately upon conviction.
That position is based on a 1995
advisory opinion from the state
Division of Elections (DE).
