Last Wednesday was the first rain-without-hurricane day my kids have had off since we moved here right before Hurricane Wilma in 2005. It was interesting and felt so much more like a snow day than a hurricane day does. Hurricane days aren’t very enjoyable for the kids because of things like, oh, fear of death and having to pick which of their worldly possessions to cram into a small bag with which to evacuate.
Yep, this rainy day off was way different than a hurricane day off. There was hardly even any lighting in Key West (that day, anyway). Just water. A lot of water. So everybody just hung out, lazily, looking outside, checking the news for occasional weather updates. And checking Facebook for cool pictures of people swimming and kayaking down the street.
Especially wonderful was the zero effort involved in receiving word about school cancellation. That is so different from when I was growing up. In those days we huddled around the radio waiting to hear the morning DJ announce “Bay City Public Schools” as part of the long list of schools in mid- Michigan who’d cancelled for the day because of snow or ice.
