Goodbye, dear readers. This will be my last regular column in this space. I hate it myself when columnists vanish without a word, like “disappeared” persons in murderous regimes, so I’m going to tell you exactly what happened. And it’s not all bad.
The immediate cause is, indeed, bad. In earlier pages of this issue you can read a long letter criticizing my last article on animal shelters. This letter is so off base, so excessively personal and factually inaccurate, that I felt it was an embarrassment to the writer, whom I like and respect. I would be able to so eviscerate it in reply that it would tarnish her reputation in the community.
So I asked my Esteemed Publisher, Dennis Cooper, if it would be proper to give the writer a second chance, with a hint at what parts of her letter would be most vulnerable to my counterattack. Dennis instead said any response from me would have to start with an “apology.” He did not bother to ask for the basis of my counterattack. He likes the SPCA.
