Everyone has heard or read the pop-psychology analyses of how people choose pets. Dogs are supposed to be a barometer of an owner’s psyche and mirror the master’s personality and are said to be chosen for that reason. In Key West, people use different criteria for choosing dogs. They select dogs by weight and living space. Because we live in the sub-tropics where big furry animals suffer and many owners live in small spaces with tiny yards, small breeds adapt more easily. Consequently, size and weight are principal criteria for adding a pooch to the pouch. Status breeds still reign for those using the dog as an accessory Here’s how it works.
Feather Weights
Some miniature dog-ophiles like to saunter about town holding and stroking their little critters. They like taking them to restaurants so people will baby-talk to them and feed them from the table. Others like to take their dogs to bars and have tipsy patrons trip over them or their leashes. However, restaurants and bars are not the only venues where one finds pocket dogs. Two weeks ago, at a packed matinee at the Tropic, a portly couple wheeled in a miniature baby carriage with two “nutria-dogs” tucked neatly into it and preceded to the front row. They took 5 minutes to position the buggy for optimal screen viewing. The little ones didn’t bark during the movie, but they needed to tinkle twice and Mr. Really Big had to stand to fuss with the ermine coverlet before taking Jeremy and Jasper to the loo. I missed the murder and the climax.
